Brian Stieg Shield

During the winter of 2002 the Lower Plenty Cricket Club was involved in a meeting with the North Eltham Wanderers to discuss the plight of our Junior program which saw us down to 4 players.  The President of NEWCC, Brian Stieg allowed us to look at how they ran their program, and assisted with various options to allow Lower Plenty to continue as a stand alone Club in the future.

The result of this close relationship saw the introduction of the "Brian Stieg Shield" which will be played for each season by the highest graded junior teams of the two Clubs.  This shield was donated by the Mash family which has been involved at Lower Plenty since 1954.

The first match for the shield was in season 2004-2005 at Under 12 (1) level and saw North Eltham Wanderers win.  NEW 117 [Jackson Ball 3-10, Liam Hunt 2-10] def Lower Plenty 8-84 [Darcy Vallance 17, Niall Smith 15no, Adam Bowen 12]

In 2005-2006, the Under 16 (1) sides met and again NEW were victorious. NEW 1-130 [Duane McKinnon 1-14] def Lower Plenty 8-99 [Daniel Offer 38, Chris Bowen 18, John Perichon 10]

In 2006-2007, NEW again kept the shield with the Under 16 teams again playing in a very close game for the shield.  NEW 150 [Josh Silic 4-21, Carl Robinson 3-23, Daniel Offer 2-16] defeated Lower Plenty 134 [Daniel Offer 43, Chris Bowen 27, Luke Bramich 26]

2007-2008 saw a very strong NEW decimate our batting to record a great win.  NEW 4-142 [Liam Lacy 2-26, Matt Staples 2-31] def Lower Plenty 44 [Hayden Hunt 16] and 6-56 [Matt Staples 19no, Adam Bowen 12]

2008-2009 saw North Eltham Wanderers have another win for the Shield in the U16 (1) Teal grade.  Lower Plenty 5-161cc [Josh Saunders 57, Adam Bowen 34no, Niall Smith 20, Ryan Armstrong and Liam McEvoy 14] lost to NEW 174 [Niall Smith 4-27].

The Under 14 (1) Blue team played for the Shield in 2009-2010 and North Eltham took their winning run to 6 when they had a big win by 124 runs.  Lower Plenty 8-88 [Jake Garner 33, Dylan Kane 14, Damon Stewart 11] lost to NEW 5-212 [Aiden McKay 3-28]

We look forward to great contests in the future and the shield to be in our rooms and thank Brian and his Committee for their help when we set about rebuiling the great Lower Plenty Cricket Club.
